Boy Scouts of America and Lawsuits

I have fond memories of my time in scouting dating back to the 1950s, an experience that had a profound influence on my life and success. According to the folks at Google, 110 million people participated in scouting for the last century. According to court filings, somewhat less than 100,000 of those youth were sexually abused. The national scout organization puts that number at 20,000. Either of those numbers represents a minuscule percentage of the young people who benefited from scouting, but they are far too many young people to have suffered from the scouting program. Lawsuits filed on behalf of those who are abused seem destined to eliminate the scouting program altogether. The goal should be to have scouting be a positive influence for several hundred million more youth over the next century without any of them being abused.
